The Declaration of Independence provides the philosophical basis for the existence of a free people.
It establishes that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable and endowed to the people by their Creator.
The Constitution establishes the existence and the structure of a government to secure these rights consistent with the consent of the governed, "We the People."
If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the general welfare, the government is no longer a limited one possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one subject to particular exceptions. -James Madison

For starters, marking the Treasury's gold to market would create a huge headache of an ever-fluctuating balance sheet as the price of gold rises and falls, pointed out Dimitri Papadimitriou, president of the Levy Economics Institute at Bard College.

I am reminded of two periods in recent and not-so-recent history.
First, Herbert Hoover's policies amid the crash in the late '20s and early '30s allowed the economy to go into the Great Depression, which was so deep it took 10 years and a world war to get us out of it completely.
Franklin Roosevelt's policies were best at alleviating the suffering caused by Hoover's folly, they kept the economy from worsening and sowed the seeds for the prosperity of the '40s and '50s.

North Dakota's only congressman says he'll vote in favor of the health insurance reform bill that could be voted on in the US House tomorrow.
A spokesperson in Earl Pomeroy's office says the congressman supports the bill with the changes that were made to untie payments to medical providers from Medicare rates and allow negotiations on payment rates.
The vote on the two-thousand page reform bill may happen Saturday and national media reports say it would be a very close vote.
